Questions:
1. Can you describe about your findings in the French Film: (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eeVMu7-PO9A&feature=youtu.be). If he (or she) could be your brother (or sister) or families, what kinds of vivid things in this film could inspire you?

2. In 2014, UN Women, a branch of the United Nations, co-worked with agency Memac Ogilvy & Matherto and unveiled a new discovery by utilizing Google's search bar to showcases the world's sweeping, misogynistic attitudes toward women. Are you surprised by the following search results? And, what could be the search results of “men need to…”, “men should…”, “men cannot…”, and “men shouldn’t…”?

A. Top 4 search results of “women need to…”:
I. “Women need to be put in their place”.
II. “Women need to know their place”.
III. “Women need to be controlled”.
IV. “Women need to be disciplined”.

B. Top 4 search results of “women should…”:
I. “Women should stay at home”.
II. “Women should be slaves”.
III. “Women should be in the kitchen”.
IV. “Women should not speak in church”.

C. Top 4 search results of “women cannot…”:
I. “Women cannot drive”.
II. “Women cannot be bishops”.
III. “Women cannot be trusted”.
IV. “Women cannot speak in church”.

D. Top 4 search results of “women shouldn’t… ”:
I. “Women shouldn’t have rights”.
II. “Women shouldn’t vote”.
III. “Women shouldn’t work”.
IV. “Women shouldn’t box”.

3. Nowadays, do you agree that gender equality has being improved worldwide? According to Gender Inequality Index, surveyed by United Nations, Taiwan is ranked at the 2nd place right after Holland in achievement of gender equality. Do you know that? Or, do you agree with that ranking report? Could you give some good examples or to-be-improved examples of its related performance in Taiwan?

4. Perhaps, gender equality could be too serious to be discussed at all. It looks that Men own more physical strength than women, and undoubtedly men are oriented to more outdoor and risky activities. Women are normally considered to take care of all things at home. Once gender equality is repeatedly emphasized at home, afraid to say, more quarrels and argument must happen in families and cause more fights, divorces, or tragedies in families! Do you agree about the mentioned?

5. Summary: one minute for each person who will have read at http://www.bbc.com/news/world-asia-23241937in advance, if we have sufficient time for this.

Dear Taichung Happiers,

Question: What is the thinnest book in the world?
Answer: What men know about women!

How do gender role stereotypes affect the way we view and react to everyday life experiences? For example, while finishing a paragraph of a piece of writing, can you immediately know whether it is by a woman or not? Here is a quiz.
http://www.theguardian.com/books/quiz/2011/jun/02/naipaul-test-author-s-sex-quiz?intcmp=239 Moreover, what causes gender bias or gender inequality? Your comments and questions will be greatly welcomed. A profound (and funny) conversation with Happiers will invite a long-lasting smile on our host Jeffrey’s face.

How do we learn gender roles in a specific social and cultural context? If you have a daughter, what will you tell her about gender roles? The award-winning fantasy novelist Celine Kiernan stated: “A female character can: Like babies, Be devoted to her lover, Cry, Be gentle, Be scared, Be uncertain, Take advice, and still be a YA heroine.” Hummmm…. Sounds lovely, doesn’t it?

American writer, activist, and feminist Betty Friedan (February 4, 1921 – February 4, 2006) strongly encourages the creative process. “The only way for a woman, as for a man, to find herself, to know herself as a person, is by creative work of her own. There is no other way.” Identifying who we are by creative works of our own will make it possible to bridge the gender gap. The group Out of the Blue from the University of Oxford can not only prove this point, but also make a charitable contribution.

However long the way will be to achieve gender equality, empathy will be the only solution. Whatever the gender bias can be, remember the emphasis placed by Saadi, a Persian poet of the 13th Century, that we are all members of a whole.

Human beings are members of a whole,
In creation of one essence and soul.
If one member is afflicted with pain,
Other members uneasy will remain.
If you’ve no sympathy for human pain,
The name of human you cannot retain!

Save your weekend for our discussion, wherever you are from--Mars, Venus, or _____. Thanks!
