Dear Taichung Happiers,

Please finish this sentence: learning a foreign language is ______________________________.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9OB72GZOS4c

Language is the door to dreams. Our first-time host Alice has elegantly opened the door. She is a retired English teacher and the former president of Toastmaster Club. After winning the Toastmasters Taiwan District championship of English Speech contest, she attended the International Contest in the US, depicting “The Beginning of the Story”. Alice’s explicit goal reminds me of what my teacher repeatedly suggested:”Practice doesn’t make perfect; perfect practice makes perfect.” The language we are speaking directs our eyes, shapes our thinking, and influences our behaviors. Without language, we can see only empty rivers and locked houses. Learning a new language engages our senses in a new and powerful way—it provokes us to feel more, create more, and reflect more on ourselves. The beauty of language functions as a generative value in the voice of every passionate learner/user. Although nothing could have prepared us for the way every corner of the world is possessed by the passion for English, the respect flowing from my teacher’s voice and eyes is the most sincere and steadiest encouragement for me. Deep down, I hope this kind of respect and encouragement can be continuously seen in Happy English Club. Ladies and gentlemen, welcome to join us in getting the “Shakespeare” face on for this weekend.

A new language is a new hope. “Language is the means of getting an idea from my brain into yours without surgery.” Talking about the benefits of learning a new language is much much more exciting than running a shopping marathon. Language extends our short time and limited space, by bringing the complication and information of other people’s knowledge and life experiences. Tell me, please, would the human thought and desire survive without the storytellers, the poets, the historians, the scientists, or the singers? Without language, what heritage would have descended to us? Check out how Steven Pinker, the professor of Psychology at Harvard University, illustrates how brain allows us to use language for abstract purposes.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Q-B_ONJIEcE&app=desktop The journey of language learning has unzipped our minds and seen inside; the social conventions, the eye contact, and the intonation we have while practicing a new language boost our confidence, and consequently cultivate our decision-making skills. https://www.scientificamerican.com/article/foreign-language-improve-decisions/ What takes our breath away when we learn a new language? Perhaps, it’s like when we open the champagne, we feel the bubble of enthusiasm rising up exquisitely and mysteriously, projecting happy brightness, looking so distant and simultaneously so close to us, and we say “Le terroir”! When we learn a new language, the world is so much bigger and better than we expected! When we learn a new language, it makes us feel that we can be bigger and better, too. https://www.theguardian.com/commentisfree/2015/apr/27/world-view-learn-another-language

When did you last let your heart decide? Not only American author H. Jackson Brown, Jr. gave a piece of his mind--“Never make fun of someone who speaks broken English. It means they know another language”, but also British scholar and writer Roger Ascham (c. 1515 – December 23, 1568) had seen language more intensively and encouraged people with pretty words: “As a hawk flieth not high with one wing, even so a man reacheth not to excellence with one tongue.” The secret of language is the secret of attitude; what makes people decide to pursue the proficiency of a new language can be beyond our imagination and expectation. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Enxcv2xNmdY I know, I know, the most beautiful language is the language of food, and, the theories of language acquisition might be all Greek to us. Having fun and enjoying the learning process can effortlessly sustain our primary motivations; meanwhile, reading is the most essential infrastructure on the land of language. Then, how to make reading more enjoyable and richly rewarding? Do you prefer novels or comics? http://www.comic-prospector.com/24-awesome-batman-comics-to-read-online-for-free/ Have you ever listened to poetry readings at midnight? https://www.theatlantic.com/entertainment/archive/2014/11/how-to-read-poetry-a-step-by-step-guide/380657/ Above all, we cannot afford to underestimate the power of context. Which context you have encountered is the most empowering? While one context in the language castle surprising you, shocking you, striking you with undisputed depth and gifting you the vibrating courage for the unknown future, the brilliant sunlight reveals the message within the invisible ink: let go of your “language ego” and find self-affirmation. Yes! Once upon a context……. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xcyDEzv9Hi0

“THE CHAOS” (by Dr. Gerard Nolste Trenité)

To dream or not to dream, that is the question. Every language is interrelated with its culture. “My wife is teaching me Cuban. It's like Spanish but with fewer words for luxury goods.” It’s language that formulates who we are and how we are. It’s what we do with the language and how others respond to our language, not language itself, that change our lives. It’s the fear or the discomfort of learning that makes us miss the wonder of language. We focus on the culture while learning a language--what its speakers believe, how they behave, their foods, fears, customs, celebrations, etc. have enormous influence on their attitudes, values, and ideas. Yes. Now, again, relax, please. Have a nice cup of coffee, and learn languages and cultures through films. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uYQ4zLFC-5E How a language can inform us of its culture? How culture can help us understand the language? Everyone has their own Shakespeare face. We feel a mix of emotions circling and clearing the way the bright thread connecting the language to us circling and clearing. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5Gk9A_dnmK8 It’s the originality of language and cultural tastes for us--the highest of language is to affect our daily life--can we allow and appreciate multiculturalism in the English language? In this era of globalization, of cross culture, will English evolve into a fusion style, or it has been, already? Where English will take us is based on chance; in which direction we will shape English is all about choice. The English we develop is our own; identity drives opportunities. Everyone has their own “Shakespeare” face—dream the dreams of a relatively authentic speaker, shall we? Dream on and share out loud. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZEWlBW51j3A

Language learning is a long way from “home” —in order to return home again, we have to travel far far away. Language is the window to another culture; after returning from the learning journey, we find our culture stranger, in a good way, than others, and we are humble enough to apprehend and acknowledge it. German writer Johann Wolfgang von Goethe (August 28, 1749 – March 22, 1832) admonished us that “Those who know nothing of foreign languages know nothing of their own.” Along the learning journey, we constantly breathe doubt, desolation, reservation, and restlessness --only awakening to identity filters out from the soul the dust of daily life and helps us exhale the satisfaction, inspiration, and rejoicing through our hearts. Language is the unpredictable yet valuable light reflecting who we are. Love yourself. Lay on your cool face. Join us. Thanks!!!https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ChcR2gKt5WM
