Dear Taichung Happiers,

So many languages, so “few” accents.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MhCEdIqFCck

How do languages make human unique? French Enlightenment writer, historian, and philosopher François-Marie Arouet (1694 – 1778) outlined a pretty prophetic vision. “If you know many languages, then you have many keys for a castle.” Our willingness to engage with languages and everything they offer is clear; our readiness to grow, to transmute, and to capture experiences is clear. Research results have shown the amazing effects of multilingualism, including improving our decision-making efficiency and preventing the suffering from dementia. Besides, what happens to your face when you speak another language tells a hundred stories. Language can transport people, so that we are no longer simply audiences but participants in the realization of a bigger, better world that we seek to create. We take the shelter in the embrace of foreign languages and diverse cultures. On the other hand, learning a foreign language could be intensely irritating and frustrating. However, only when we open up to be more accepting and make the learning process more motivating, can dreams become reality. We can be at an unusual loss for words due to the indescribable beauty of languages, which allows everyone to be heard and appreciates everyone’s work. Ladies and gentleman, our host Kevin Hsu, a researcher at the National Health Research Institutes, will take you by surprise with this discussion. Welcome to join us in savoring every mouthful of language learning.

If there is any truth in the world, it lies when more languages are with us. “Does Hip Hop count as a second language?” German writer Johann Wolfgang von Goethe (August 28, 1749 – March 22, 1832) drew the language map, “Those who know nothing of foreign languages know nothing of their own.” Virginia Woolf (1882 – 1941), English writer and one of the foremost modernists of the twentieth century, exhibited an American version of French accent: “Language is wine upon the lips.” In addition, Italian film director and screenwriter Federico Fellini (20 January 1920 – 31 October 1993) pictured the magic wand of language, “A different language is a different vision of life.” And, these kids have more.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BF83GlBo-d0 So, how do you know a foreign language is your destiny? When you are fascinated by a foreign language, you remember the day you bought your first book/CD in it. When you are fascinated by a foreign language, you remember all those nights you couldn’t sleep yet enjoyed the journey into dawn on the wings of pages and tunes. When you are fascinated by a foreign language, the clear culture indications light up your face all the time. Every foreign language is a marvelous museum—where your gaze lingers in and you feel it covers 20 centuries in 20 minutes. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Wszb2x51jnY Learning foreign languages opens our eyes and minds about other cultures; it changes our outlook; ultimately, we develop empathy. It is the dynamic languages create for everyone that stimulates our change. A whole new perspective on the world is more than rewarding. https://www.theguardian.com/commentisfree/2015/apr/27/world-view-learn-another-language

Language learning is like making a pizza the size of the sun. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DfIc5CX7mF4 Canadian-American cognitive psychologist and linguist Steven Pinker is a Professor in the Department of Psychology at Harvard University. About the language instinct, he informs us that “Obviously no language is innate. Take any kid from any race, bring them up in any culture and they will learn the language equally quickly. So no particular language is in the genes. But what might be in the genes is the ability to acquire language.” Yes. Everyone is a language superhero. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XJjzCBRMaso When do you know you are in a blossoming garden with the bright scented flowers of the foreign language you are learning? When you compose everything in this language and make it sound exactly like music. When you feel the author silently shares the secret jokes with you. When you smile, and say, “Yes. Only in this language!” http://www.cambridge.org/elt/blog/wp-content/uploads/2018/10/How-long-does-it-take-to-learn-a-foreign-language.pdf I know, I know, British and Dutch researchers are revealing that alcohol can help develop our speaking proficiency of foreign languages. No worries. In case you are allergic to alcohol, the alternative way is allowing people to say your accent is ugly, and then you have the opportunity to make it beautiful. “Sì, grazie.” How, you are asking? Well, the fun ways can be effectively using TV shows and films https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=emMKQu1usZ0 , deploying apps daily https://www.makeuseof.com/tag/five-free-apps-help-learn-foreign-language/ , and any other methods we can’t wait to learn from you.

From “Eating Poetry” (By Mark Strand)

Ink runs from the corners of my mouth.
There is no happiness like mine.
I have been eating poetry.

The librarian does not believe what she sees.
Her eyes are sad
and she walks with her hands in her dress.

The poems are gone.
The light is dim.
The dogs are on the basement stairs and coming up…

If we keep putting one foot in front of the other, we can make any foreign languages home. “My main motivation for learning a third language is so that I can unlock another level of memes.” The mission of language learning is to create more connections. The language of connection is the only source of light grazing the shadows. The language of connection is recited by valuable and meaningful things we contribute to. Nature is the most inspiring teacher for the language of connection. Check out this Wood Wide Web: the roots, the networks, the plant communities. The eyes of nature constantly and consistently transmit both warm and authority--they deserve more respect.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7kHZ0a_6TxY The language of connection is the only source of light grazing the shadows. The infectious smile suddenly shines our faces each time the light reads our minds. Being a connector is absolutely accessible; the value of being a connector is conclusively communicable. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=S13kvkB4RL0 The language of connection is the only source of light grazing the shadows. If the language of connection is not the language of harmony, what is? Connections can take every culture to new heights, whatever language we are speaking. Harmony is the immortal culture, wherever we are, whenever we reflect. If we keep putting one foot in front of the other, we can make any foreign languages home. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QcX6i2qp6w0

Every foreign language is a reflection of our own selves. Inside it, there are the persons we could be. When languages start charming us, our inability to endure is our last defense. We are incapable of resisting and would never want to resist the gift. The 1st President of Czechoslovakia Tomáš Garrigue Masaryk (7 March 1850 – 14 September 1937) simply asserted that “The more languages you know, the more human you are.” Language learning is a journey of adventure for our missing piece, which is filled with spiritual comfort and sublime beauty. Language learning feeds our hungry souls with the abundance of inspiration. The language of connection feels like hope in the darkest moments, brings real delight with the bridge of cultural diversity. Upon language learning, every color, every fragrance the world has to offer, is brighter and more sincere. This empowering experience always greets us with a faint light weaving the scene into the texture of dreams. Yes. Let us feel the light! Let languages induce us to like who we are, who we become while immersing in connections. Join us. Thanks!!! https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=b9yVSxHd9vk
