Dear Taichung Happiers,

Why architecture?
https://mymodernmet.com/reinhard-gorner-library-interiors/

What do English learning and architecture design have in common? Well, it is quite intriguing and inspiring. Still, no worries. Getting our growing anticipation, our host Chi--an architect and university lecturer--is more than qualified to solve this riddle. Why architecture? Are you seized by any enthusiasm or intention of architecture? How can architecture interpret the sprit and soul of a place? American architect, interior designer, writer, and educator Frank Lloyd Wright (June 8, 1867 – April 9, 1959) shed the light on what is needed most in architecture. “Just as it is in a human being, so integrity is the deepest quality in a building...if we succeed, we will have done a great service to our moral nature- the psyche- of our democratic society...Stand up for integrity in your building and you stand for integrity not only in the life of those who did the building but socially a reciprocal relationship is inevitable.” Have you ever considered becoming an architect? Is there any emotional relationship between your childhood memories and any buildings/landscape? To further promote Taiwan, Chi is inviting us to turn our gaze down into the hidden cultural depths of local architecture and to spread the stories globally. Welcome to join us in supporting our first-time host Chi and savoring some sentiments and high hopes for Architecture.

The “Light” element in architecture signals our culture. Light. Light shapes the boundaries, expands space, and creates the connection between places. "Hey dad how was your weekend?" "Light, dark, light, dark, Monday." Light. The physical light mirrors our spiritual light--our psychological warmth--this relates to our nature we show how we think and act. Light. The “light” element in architecture reflects the openness of culture. Check out this brief architectural history to feel the opening allowing light in.

German writer and statesman Johann Wolfgang von Goethe (28 August 1749 – 22 March 1832) called architecture “frozen music”; two centuries later, Chinese American architect Ieoh Ming Pei spelled out what kind of architecture and messages we are going for. “Contemporary architects tend to impose modernity on something. There is a certain concern for history but it’s not very deep. I understand that time has changed, we have evolved. But I don’t want to forget the beginning. A lasting architecture has to have roots.” Roots. Every culture is a mind programming of a group of people; architecture sustains the stories of our everyday life. Every culture whispers about a certain kind of use of space, and we have to attach it to our attention and aspirations. Every culture solidly affects architecture while architecture is silently affecting every culture. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yEkDosanxGk&app=desktop Furthermore, we see the beauty of intercultural experience, when the building reveals our culture and the architect raises the authenticity of his/her identity—National Taichung Theatre is a splendid example. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GFgCHxrJAOA

“Ode To Enchanted Light” (by Pablo Neruda)

Under the trees light
has dropped from the top of the sky,
light
like a green
latticework of branches,
shining
on every leaf,
drifting down like clean
white sand.
A cicada sends
its sawing song
high into the empty air.
The world is
a glass overflowing
with water.

The “Water” element in architecture signals sustainability and resources. Every journey is a river; every function of water is essential.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ApN73TUVMEU The Nobel Prize laureate in Literature Thomas Stearns Eliot (26 September 1888 – 4 January 1965) admonished the abuse of natural resources. “We are being made aware that the organization of society on the principle of private profit, as well as public destruction, is leading both to the deformation of humanity by unregulated industrialism, and to the exhaustion of natural resources, and that a good deal of our material progress is a progress for which succeeding generations may have to pay dearly.” Now, the rippling waves are more than visible. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=b6fHA9R2cKI It is more than vital to zoom out to have a wide view of the environmental expectations that can be met and challenged by architecture. Physically, water plays a significant role in architecture. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1baKaIwY4eQ In the mean time, water empathizes more with fluidity and flexibility—which reflects the sustainable solutions to the problem of how we live and how we interact with the environment. The “Water” element in architecture encourages investigation and exposure to preserve the close and capable bond between humanity and nature. Above all, the water camera has zoomed in on the sensitivity for more possibilities and opportunities, as well as the sense of community and connectedness. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RsbZsjXj8iA

The “Air” element in architecture signals growth. Architecture is about physical environment and psychological well-being; architecture is about having faith in life. “How do construction workers party?” “They raise the roof.” It is the mobility of the “Air” element that architects and architecture bewitch us, which instructs us to be comfortable with the external uncertainty and to pursue an internal growth mindset. Personally, I feel so pleased and fortunate to have the moments immovably embracing a special space in my memory—the moments I immersed myself into The Hundertwasserhaus in Vienna, The State Library of Victoria, The British Museum, etc. They are not just a feast for the senses but also a remarkable reminder for a growth mindset. In addition, the self-education journey of Japanese architect Tadao Ando also amplifies my appreciation. http://www.bestinteriordesigners.eu/top-architects-tadao-ando/ Architecture is the most innovative part that every country can showcase. Architects learn from the classics, and, what should (not) be repeated by them? How do they decide what (not) to include in their design? https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NI9E3R_55xc Architecture is, undoubtedly, impactful. The “Air” element refers to a subtle yet speedy vibration of energy. How about the air we breathe together? Through it, nothing but the collective confidence and compassion are exhibited in architectural works. Serving as Prime Minister of the United Kingdom, Winston S. Churchill (30 November 1874 – 24 January 1965) simply asserted “We shape our buildings; thereafter they shape us.” Echoing this, Chilean architect Alejandro Aravena has more. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=o0I0Poe3qlg&app=desktop

Everyone desires somewhere where the door is always open. Architecture elevates everything about how to enlighten and empower our minds--and how we compose and circulate our stories. American environmentalist Gaylord Nelson (June 4, 1916 – July 3, 2005) had the vision. “Our goal is not just an environment of clean air and water and scenic beauty. The objective is an environment of decency, quality and mutual respect for all other human beings and all other living creatures.” Hopefully, the blissful smile will return fully to everyone’s face, when we witness the perfect architecture symphony of technology, creativity, and integrity. Here is The Tree House for you. Enjoy! (By the way, happy Lantern Festival!) Join us. Thanks!!! https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Z5LWb4Ogh4c&app=desktop
