Dear Taichung Happiers,

What would Shakespeare say? 7 is the most beautiful number?
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Tuhs2GWrnXc

Raise your hand, if English is your first love. Improving English is in almost every Happier’s list of 2017 New Years’ Resolutions. English is a funny language though. “That explains why we park our car on the driveway and drive our car on the parkway.” Why did German writer Johann Wolfgang von Goethe (August 28, 1749 – March 22, 1832) immensely insisted “Those who know nothing of foreign languages know nothing of their own”? How to increase our motivation and plan the priorities? Language learning is a lifelong journey; learning is a highly perplexing and personal process; the most effective methods are those deliver you delightful feelings. However, together, by sharing approaches and apprehension, we can turn our struggles into strengths. Can’t wait for our former President Kevin Huang’s hosting again!!! Welcome to join this collective learning of nourishing our memory muscles to develop a wide vocabulary.

Remember why you love English. “Why” sustains the love and motivates our actions. English! We love English because 26 is not the most difficult number? (According to Oxford Dictionary, the longest word to be found in Britain is Llanfairpwllgwyngyllgogerychwyrndrobwllllantysiliogogogoch
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_3b2F-bkAdM ) Except for enhanced career and communication competences, what can we benefit from English learning? Well, first of all, a healthier brain. Dr. Thomas Bak, a lecturer at the University of Edinburgh has demonstrated that bilinguals’ cognitive decline can be delayed due to their attention mechanism. https://www.theatlantic.com/health/archive/2014/10/more-languages-better-brain/381193/ The revealed research results might take us by surprise that knowing second language can make leaders more problem-solving and responsibility oriented by developing distinguished decision-making and directorial skills. https://www.washingtonpost.com/blogs/post-leadership/post/can-speaking-a-second-language-make-you-a-better-leader/2012/08/28/a69a246a-f133-11e1-892d-bc92fee603a7_blog.html?utm_term=.04cab70d999f Additionally, thanks to Globalization, “English is not merely a language anymore, it has become a way of life for millions of non-native English speakers around the world”, says Author M.F. Moonzajer. Above all, language is an open door, which welcomes the light of thinking in a new way and transforms our perception. Language is an open door constructing our cultural curiosity—no cultural curiosity, no language proficiency. Language is an open door, through it, we see what is and what could be in the world, see the resemblances and differences in the world, and see prosperity and problems in the world. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Wszb2x51jnY

Recite. To improve English, love your voice like crazy. Reciting can not only cultivate the coordination of our mind and tongue for the mental muscles, but also convey you to the author’s heart. English is music-- writers are composers--readers’ voice is the most inexplicable instrument playing the English music. Award-winning author Kent Nerburn has lifted his eyes from the writer’s music muscles. “I take the music of language very seriously. Like a heartbeat, it exists right below consciousness — it animates and infuses your language with life.... A good sentence should sound good and feel good and roll comfortably off your tongue, not simply serve as a conveyor for ideas.” A good reader, a good language learner, is remodeled from a great reciter. We can never afford to underestimate the attraction and advantage of reciting. http://www.goldenline.bcdedu.net/recitation-in-english-literature/ Perception needs imagination—what can be better than the imagination within a reciter’s voice? https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XL3oy6giCJA Inevitably, reciting literature sometimes somehow sounds intimidating. In this case, let’s instead choose an enjoyable film and recite the script. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=e3Nl_TCQXuw

How to recite a poem, if you wonder? https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9eUl4gF0ED4

Don’t repeat yourself. (Oh, no, it’s not about software engineering.) The only thing my English teacher repeatedly reminded us is “Don’t repeat yourself.” American novelist and playwright Lemony Snicket also spelled out shortly: “Don’t repeat yourself. It’s not only repetitive, it’s redundant, and people have heard it before.” Not until we stop repeating ourselves, can we realize how prodigious our potential is. Indeed, we make the quickest progress while designing different structures, describing different contexts, and discovering different stories. Heyyyyy! Everybody repeats themselves. Yes, we do. Yet, we, are, unaware. Therefore, the priority is to recognize when and about what we tend to repeat ourselves—how about recording our speaking to regard it carefully and critically? Apparently, unless you were Noah Ritter, don’t repeat yourself. Find new words for a new world. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VFEWRG8eeUY Perfect practice makes perfect. Why not continue this trailer with your own vocabulary and imagery to create a completely original story? https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gEPqLUaLbWY Creating something big doesn’t mean we shouldn’t start small. I guess language superheroes soar high on wings of sensibly sidestepping repetitive words, phrases, and structures. https://www.boundless.com/writing/textbooks/boundless-writing-textbook/writing-effective-paragraphs-253/keeping-your-writing-engaging-260/varying-your-sentence-structure-and-vocabulary-126-1673/ Get a private view of the Open Door Exhibition?

Restore our faith. It remains reliable and realistic that consistency conquers all. If you love English, love your “Why” and “How” consistently and constantly. Introduced as one of the most incredible and influential filmmakers of all time, Italian film director and screenwriter Federico Fellini (20 January 1920 – 31 October 1993) persuaded us, positively, that “A different language is a different vision of life.” Language learning invariably inspires and never disappoints. Let’s stretch and strengthen our Motivation Muscles by sticking with our weekly routine and rituals. Especially, along the learning journey, the farther we go, the more we appreciate Happiers’ mutual support. Join us. Thanks.
