Topic: LANGUAGE LEARNING

Source:
"Wall Street Institute, English on-line plus level upper waystage 2 p.60"

One of the most important things to remember when you’re learning a language is that you have to practice what you’ve learnt. It doesn’t matter if you make mistakes – after all, that’s the best way to learn, If people laugh, nine times out of then they are laughing with you, not at you. As adults we are often too inhibited to try to get our message across if it means that we might make a mistake of look foolish. But at the end of the day, we learn languages because we want to communicate and if we have a laugh along the way, that helps us learn.

Perhaps the most difficult skill to perfect is that of speaking. We may have a lot of passive knowledge stored away – many interesting words, synonyms, complex structures that we’re proud of. Words that we recognize and understand when we read them, but it’s far more difficult to activate that knowledge. It’s often the case that once you take the first step to overcome your inhibitions, the next steps become much easier. If you find yourself in an English-speaking environment, it’s important to start practicing your English as soon as you can. Take advantage of every opportunity to start up a conversation, whether at the bus stop or in a store, at your hotel or in a restaurant. Don’t be afraid to ask people to repeat themselves if you don’t understand what they have said.

Even if most people don’t have the chance to practice the spoken language on a daily basis, they will probably have the opportunity to listen to English. There are English programs on the radio and TV ; there are English videos and if you have access to cable or satellite TV, there are endless channels devoted to English. You can watch the news 24 hours a day on the BBC or CNN. You can listen to all kinds of music or watch your favorite comedy shows. Whatever your interests, you’re sure to find something to satisfy you. If you want to expand your vocabulary as well, try and write down any new words as you hear them.

Reading is an excellent way to expand your vocabulary and general language awareness. It’s very useful to read a wide range of materials. If you have access to the internet, you can spend many happy hours surfing. Any topic at any time of the day or night ! You can read magazines and newspapers and try out a novel or book of short stories. The important thing is to keep reading. Don’t worry if you don’t understand every word. Very soon you’ll get a feel for the language and you’ll be surprised at your progress. It’s important, however, not to choose texts which have too many unknown words as that’s both demotivating and boring. You may need English at work in which case you’ll need to specialize in that specific area.

Finally we come to writing. If you need to write in English for your job, it’s important to learn a few basic formula (i.e. how to write a formal letter, fax or memorandum.) Your correspondence will in general cover the same topics and you’ll quickly become familiar with terminology. If you just want general practice, why not send emails to friends? You can always ask them to correct your mistakes. Keeping a journal in English is another way to get frequent practice in expressing yourself in writing.

Whatever your reasons for learning English, the most important thing is to have fun! Learn from your mistakes and don’t be afraid to try. After all, if foreigners try to speak your language, I’m sure you’re always very pleased that they’re bothering to make the effort.

Questions:
1. Most of us have been learning English for years. Please share the path of your English learning.
2. Which parts you enjoy/annoy you while learning English? Reading? Listening? Writing? Or Speaking? Why does it challenge you the most? Why does it attract you the most?
3. We are getting together with each other every week in Happy English Club, practicing English. What are the reasons that motivate you?
4. Do you have any special ways of learning English?
