Topic: NOWADAYS LIFESTYLES
Introductions:

Darren Jordon: Now, we’ve been given a revealing glimpse of 21st century life today, with the first survey of its kind, into how we spend our time. Eating, sleeping and watching TV takes up half the day. And we spend just 20 minutes a day on household chores.
Boy: Please may I get up, I’ve had my dinner.
Jenny Scott: So much to do, such little time. Like many of us, life for the Duggan family is hectic. After a breather for a cup of tea, it’s time to get the kids off to school.
Girl: Bye Dad.
Jenny Scott: Then there’s the housework to be done, and all those other little jobs that stack up. But like most of us, there’s still time for Britain’s favorite pastime.
Becky Duggan: Once we got the children sorted we do sit and watch the TV for a while.
Dave Duggan: I like a lot of sport, so it clashes a bit with Becky, she likes mind-numbing soaps.
Becky Duggan: I have to go upstairs normally and watch what I wanna watch.
Jenny Scott: Now, for the first time, Government statisticians have looked at the whole country, and found out what we’re all doing with the time in our lives. And apart from sleeping and working, it’s watching TV that takes up most of our time, an average of two hours and 20 minutes everyday. We all have to eat, and that takes us one hour and 20 minutes. But we’re not complete couch-potatoes, about 20 minutes of our day goes on household chores, which is still more time than we spend on active sport. And despite our busy lives we still manage to get a good eight and a half hours sleep a night. Statisticians have also tried to put a value on the unpaid work we do, like ironing, cleaning and childcare.
Sue Holloway: What we’ve measured is everything that, err…we make and do that we could pay somebody else to make and do for us. So that includes things like looking after children, um..driving yourself to and from work, DIY on the home.
Jenny Scott: So what is the value of all that work that we do at home? Well, the clock-watchers estimate that it’s worth more than 700 billion every year, that’s three-quarters of the value of the whole economy. For example, looking after your own children is estimated to be worth 2.52 pounds every hour to the economy. And every time you do a load of washing it’s worth more than 5 pounds. So, if your day seems to be taken up with nothing but work, sleep and watching TV, at least you know you’re not alone.

Questions:

1. Do you agree that eating, sleeping and watching TV take up half of your life? How many hours do you spend in doing household chores per day? Or do you “ never” or “ seldom do the household chores?

2. As our article mentioned, people in Britain are hectic but still have their own favorite pastime. However, they spend a lot of time watching TV. How about you? Do you spend a lot of time watching TV program? Which TV program is your favorite one ?

3. Besides watching TV, do you like out -door activities? What kind of activity do you like?

4. What are your opinions to the TV programs and our News channels nowadays? Are there any channels or TV programs that you would like to recommend? Do you think our entertaining TV shows are suitable for our kids to watch? For example, if you watch the “Guess, Guess, Guess” show with your children, and the local king Mr. Wu says a dirty joke and transmits some bad concepts to the audiences. What would you do?

5. Comparing the lifestyle in the past time and nowadays, Have you found any differences? ( You can consider this from the different aspects of social activities, society construction or different TV programs…etc.)

6. Besides, What do you think of our educational system? Do you think our school and social education affect our lifestyle?
