Dear Taichung Happiers,

“I’m a procrastinator on different things. When it comes to writing my book? Procrastinate. When it comes to going to dinner? Early.”

How often do you procrastinate your dinner for what you love, e.g., basketball, painting, dancing, reading? Why does procrastination look like a natural part of our existence? What do we know about the history of procrastination? How do you feel about deadlines? Isn’t deadline the ultimate inspiration for creativity? Oh, yep. When I started learning English writing, my teacher not only endorsed the deadline but also encouraged a high standard of excellence: “If you don’t hand in a great essay, find the paper in the trash can tomorrow.” I guess, I guess, where the inspiration meets the expectation is the home town of procrastination. I know, I know, it will be a long journey for us to search for the meaning. So, what colors do you want to add to the narration of your life? In fact, we cannot manage time, because time is uncontrollable. We can only manage ourselves-- we cannot own any time, anything, until we really cherish it. Be aware, anytime, anywhere—find the seeds of awakening, just like what Marcus Aurelius, one of the most respected emperors in Roman history, meditated. “In your actions, don't procrastinate. In your conversations, don't confuse. In your thoughts, don't wander. In your soul, don't be passive or aggressive. In your life, don't be all about business.” Ladies and gentlemen, boys and girls, welcome to join our host Sam in paying an extraordinary amount of attention to stretching our experience of time.

Procrastination, light or shade? We all get puzzled? “Procrastination is like a credit card: it's a lot of fun until you get the bill.” We all procrastinate, at least a little bit. Aren’t we the most creative while finding enough time before starting the work? Our minds, traveling over the exercise and diet plans, determining not to put off giving up the New Year’s resolutions, are anything but. Are you a procrastinator or not? Dare to understand!
https://www.psychologytoday.com/us/tests/career/procrastination-test-abridged Putting things off, enveloped by the anticipation of fun and the whisper of flowing memories of pleasure and the distractions, the distractions, we gaze off into the distance and experience no moment of time freedom. Time freedom could be the freedom purer than any we’ve ever felt. Irish playwright and critic George Bernard Shaw (26 July 1856 – 2 November 1950) framed the mental picture. “If you take too long in deciding what to do with your life, you'll find you've done it.” Take the long-term consequences of it, external and internal, into consideration--it can seriously ruin our health, our life, and our ability of showing respect to our family, friends, and professional fellows. http://kcur.org/post/negative-consequences-procrastination#stream/0 On the other hand, few (really few) people truly encountered an (im)possibility of surviving and thriving due to their procrastination. This kind of procrastination is as structured as it can be, and the significance of that process needs no exaggeration. Geniuses like Steve Jobs and Leonardo Da Vinci did procrastinate. They procrastinated--they procrastinated productively and strategically. https://www.meaningfulhq.com/strategic-procrastination.html

Do what we love—like we’re going to lose it. “I never put off till tomorrow what I can possibly do - the day after.” With endless time, we can see nothing special, and nothing powerful, neither. Is it the worst when we tell ourselves that if I don’t have enough time and energy to do it perfectly, I don’t do it at all? Is it the worst when we forget to remind ourselves that a perfectionist might miss the treasure of experiments and the beauty of learning along the journey? After all, what are we busy with? What is the meaning of what we are busy with? https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XLEZf0S_MMQ The right time is any time that we still have. Inspirational Writer Israelmore Ayivor encourages us to get the light on. “To wake up every morning is miracle. To make a good use of every day is an appreciation of miracle. To waste the entire hours of each day is ungratefulness towards a miracle already given and received!” Let’s make every second shine in our life--we'll never know when we'll run out of time. Do you always do the hard things first? Honestly, are you more productive with or without the Internet? How to have a clear focus? How to manage ourselves to do the right thing in the right way? https://hbr.org/2018/07/the-leaders-calendar#one-ceos-approach-to-managing-his-calendar Our procrastination is fed by the fear of rejection, the fear of unknown, the fear of change, and the fear of failure. Remember to be aware of time. Once we conquer the fears and be decisive to bridge the gap between intentions and actions, how much time we’ll save is beyond our expectation and imagination. Why don’t we compare our approach and others’? https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PUAuTcdmaAc

From “I Am” (by Ella Wheeler Wilcox)

Cease wondering why you came –
Stop looking for faults and flaws;
Rise up to-day in your pride and say,
‘I am part of the First Great Cause!
However full the world,
There is room for an earnest man.
It had need of me, or I would not be –
I am here to strengthen the plan.

Be a dreamer, and, a doer. Get out of the emotional trap--manage our procrastination by managing our feelings. Our feelings get grown. Feelings are themselves organisms. The moment we embrace ourselves with self compassion is so exquisitely tender, yet, we don’t have to look away. What drives us to chase our dreams will stir all of our energy. Everyone has a missing piece--we can’t always walk hand in hand with it--make sure we are going in the same direction with it.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IFuFm0m2wj0 Take a good, hard look at some things that we might not be proud of. Meanwhile, remember that vulnerability is human, not shame—limitation is human, not shame—find the comfort to ask for help. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NDQ1Mi5I4rg While self compassion answers some questions, it creates also others. Author Bridget English simply asserted that “Everyone has the same amount of hours per day, it’s not that you don’t have enough time, it’s that you don’t have a clear focus.” Well, only when we recognize our identity, can we have a clearer focus. Who is it that you’ll try to be? What’s the most important to you? When we value only performance, the anxiety always keeps thundering past. Yet, when we accept who and what we are, when we motivate yourself with the vision of serving more and helping more people, not only our procrastination is tackled, but also our creativity starts sprouting. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RiM5a-vaNkg Wherever we're standing, don’t take any time, anything for granted. Envision our future and break down the assignments to small actions that can be implemented. Why did Grandma teach us walking with small steps? Partly because small steps can encourage an attitude of tolerance for discomfort. What is the Perfect Symphony but the Symphony of Self-compassion and Self-discipline? https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=r5NYA2PHzz0

Find humanity through the co-existence of light and shade. Before we connect with the world, we have to connect with ourselves. Our minds race and our hearts thunder in our ears, while we think of procrastination. What is buzzing under the surface of procrastination is self-defeat. Think of time; work for our curiosity; search inside ourselves, where all the light is ignited by the recognition of our identity, the continually reminded vision and mission, and the sacrifices we’ve made. Most importantly, each interruption involves a choice--prioritize the opportunities to see the good in any challenge or obligation. Give more love to this world—magic ourselves back to the castle where we see our true colors and others’ needs clearly. It is still every experiencing self who makes each other more fueled. Listen carefully to the meaning and the rhythm of the calling. In the blink of an eye, everything can be changed. What are you waiting for? Never put off creating more moments meaningful and enjoyable. Join us. Thanks. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5RAjCiW67Mc
