The information of the movie
The title derives from a chaos theory that states a butterfly flapping its wings in South Africa can cause a typhoon on the other side of the world, and the film in question asks if the same concept may be possible through time rather than space. Evan Treborn (Ashton Kutcher) is a college psychology major who, as a kid, suffered from a series of blackouts during key moments of emotional distress. After a long-estranged childhood friend, Kayleigh Miller (Amy Smart), commits suicide, Evan discovers that, when reading events in his journals, he has the unique ability to travel back in time to when these things occurred and change them. Soon, he becomes obsessed with saving Kayleigh's life, a feat that proves more difficult than expected as their pasts and futures, as well as that of pal Lenny (Elden Henson) and Kayleigh's unhinged brother, Tommy (William Lee Scott), careen progressively out of control.

Evan Treborn has lost track of time. From an early age, crucial moments of his life have disappeared into a black hole of forgetting, his boyhood marred by a series of terrifying events he can’t remember. What remains is the ghost of memory and the broken lives around him--the lives of his childhood friends, Kayleigh, Lenny and Tommy. Throughout his childhood, Evan was under the care of a psychologist who encouraged him to keep a journal, detailing the events of his day-to-day life. Now in college, Evan reads from one of his journals and finds himself thrust suddenly, inexplicably back in time. He comes to realize that the notebooks he keeps under his bed are a vehicle by which he can return to the past and reclaim his memories. But these recollections only leave Evan feeling responsible for the damaged lives of his friends, most crucially that of Kayleigh, his childhood sweetheart who he continued to love into adulthood.Determined to do something now that he was incapable of doing then, Evan purposely travels back in time, his present-day mind occupying his childhood body, in an attempt to re-write history and spare his friends and loved ones these traumatic experiences.

Other useages of Butterfly effect

The butterfly effect is a phrase that encapsulates the more technical notion of sensitive dependence on initial conditions in chaos theory. Small variations of the initial condition of a dynamical system may produce large variations in the long term behavior of the system. This is sometimes presented as esoteric behavior, but can be exhibited by very simple systems: for example, a ball placed at the crest of a hill might roll into any of several valleys depending on slight differences in initial position.

The phrase refers to the idea that a butterfly's wings might create tiny changes in the atmosphere that ultimately cause a tornado to appear (or, for that matter, prevent a tornado from appearing). The flapping wing represents a small change in the initial condition of the system, which causes a chain of events leading to large-scale phenomena. Had the butterfly not flapped its wings, the trajectory of the system might have been vastly different.

The butterfly effect, first described by Lorenz at the December 1972 meeting of the American Association for the Advancement of Science in Washington, D.C., vividly illustrates the essential idea of chaos theory. In a 1963 paper for the New York Academy of Sciences, Lorenz had quoted an unnamed meteorologist's assertion that, if chaos theory were true, a single flap of a single seagull's wings would be enough to change the course of all future weather systems on the earth. By the time of the 1972 meeting, he had examined and refined that idea for his talk, "Predictability: Does the Flap of a Butterfly's Wings in Brazil set off a Tornado in Texas?" The example of such a small system as a butterfly being responsible for creating such a large and distant system as a tornado in Texas illustrates the impossibility of making predictions for complex systems; despite the fact that these are determined by underlying conditions, precisely what those conditions are can never be sufficiently articulated to allow long-range predictions.

Questions:

1.Have you seen the movie "The Butterfly Effect" ? If yes, share with us what you have learned from the movie.
2. If you’ve never seen the movie, after reading this article, please tell us what you learned from it.
3.If you had the ability to travel back in time to change the history , what would you like to change in your life?
4. Do you believe in fate? Do you believe “Man proposes, God disposes.” or “Where there's a will there's a way.”??
