Topic: How Perfect is Perfection?

Source: February 2008 English Digest 實用空中美語Page19

How perfect is perfection?

Do you work your hardest all the time? Do you never give up until you get things right? Although society rewards perfectionism because it seems beneficial in the workplace, recent studies suggest that it leads to stress which in turn can have tragic consequences.

Perfectionists come in several forms. Some constantly strive to achieve their goals and are overly critical of themselves, often resulting in depression. Others accept nothing less than perfection from those around them, undermining their personal relationships. Still others feel like they always have to live up to the expectations of others. This group often runs a high risk of developing eating disorders and even committing suicide. The common thread among all these different types of perfectionists is that they cannot tolerate failure. For them, to not excel is to fail.

What plagues most perfectionists is an all-or-nothing mindset. You either win or lose; there is no second place. A university counselor conducted studies on perfectionists, having them resist impulses to go above and beyond at work. “What some of them considered failure was what most other people would consider no big deal,” she said. Much to the perfectionists’ surprise, everything ran fine without them giving their all. Considering the negative health effects of stress, perhaps perfection isn’t perfect after all.

Question:
1. Are you a perfectionist? What would you do you if you couldn’t live up to your own expectations?
2. In your opinion, does perfectionism have more advantages than disadvantages?

3. Do you know any perfectionists? How do you feel about them?
