Topic: The Sizzling Success of 85℃

Source: August 2007 No.44 of BIZ(Interactive English for BUSINESS) Page35-38

The Sizzling Success of 85℃
85℃ Café is the hottest competitor in the beverage and baking business in Taiwan .In less than three years their market share is already thirty percent(Starbucks is holing at twenty-three percent). 85℃ has over 280 branches of both regular chain and franchise store. Monthly income at the shops averages between 150 and 700 thousand NT dollars, capturing the attention of entrepreneurs with limited investment capital receives up to 600 calls per month from these entrepreneurs hoping to join the wildly popular franchise .Wu Cheng-Hsueh, founder and major franchise owner, has become a household name in Taiwan.
Wu Cheng-Hsueh has just a junior high school degree. After completing military service, he resolved to rise above poverty and began saving money in hopes of one day opening his own business. His first job was as a piecework factory worker, often working until midnight when others had already left at five. In three months, he had saved 120 thousand NT dollars which served as his first business capital.
Wu’s early tries included a hair salon, a shoe factory, and he co-owned an Easy Way bubble tea house franchise with an army buddy. Wu saw opportunities in the chain store market and decided to create his own chain of stores. The result was Hot 2 Home pizza shops. Hot 2 Home enjoyed a brief period of prosperity, but business soon fell into decline. After analyzing the problem, Wu found that by purchasing ready-made pizza pastries and leaving each branch shop to finalize the product, it become difficult to regulate and maintain the quality of their pizza. It would be impossible, he realized, to sustain a business simply with low-price strategy but without decent quality.
When he went on holiday with his wife to Japan, Wu discovered a trend involving restaurant chefs starting their own stylish delicatessens, and that an increasing number of Japanese customers preferred takeout desserts. He observed, as well, hat during the SARS epidemic, when so many businesses were experiencing a financial pinch, the premium lunch boxes offered by five-star hotels were wildly popular. It was then that he came up withy the idea of offering five-star hotel quality desserts and coffee at coffee shop prices.
Wu lured five-star hotel chefs with a high salary and a system of profit sharing and stock ownership, and ran his business with a marketing strategy combing high quality and low price. The products and their prices were displayed clearly in shop windows, creating a customer-friendly environment.
All 85℃ products are made in a central kitchen and distributed to each store to ensure constant quality. A cup of aromatic coffee that is superb but inexpensive, and a fine piece of cake that is worth more than its prices; these are the attractions that holds for its customers.
Wu Cheng-Hsueh doesn’t have an outstanding degree and may not have a remarkable family background, but at forty years of age, his many years of experience have given him an acute sense of market trends. Created by Wu alone, 85℃ Café has penetrated the markets of Australia and China. This once local chain store in Taiwan has become international, spreading its respected brand across borders.

Question:
1. If you are the customer of 85℃ Café, what’s your appreciation for it?
2. In now days economic environment, the story of 85℃ Café just like a legend, so it gives us what kind of inspiration ?
3. Do you want to join the franchise of 85℃ Café or not ,tell us the reason.
